This report is compiled weekly to inform the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and WSU Extension of significant news coverage and issues in the news that may be of special interest. No attempt is made to be comprehensive. News items are garnered from local news outlets, and Google and Yahoo news alerts that search news sources worldwide.
In the News
On Thursday, public radio’s Northwest News Network aired an interview with Juming Tang about the FDA approval of his patented microwave technology for food preservation.
The Yakima Herald-Republic on Wednesday reported on WSU’s plan to reopen its learning center in Yakima that had been closed due to budget cuts.
Tuesday’s Aberdeen Daily World reported on a county commission budget hearing at which more than 120 4-H supporters showed up to argue against county cuts to the program.
A story in Monday’s Kirkland Reporter about a King County Council budget hearing mentioned that a large group of WSU Master Gardener volunteers attended to voice support for continued county funding for Extension.
Friday’s Yakima Herald-Republic reported on a USDA grant to a Wapato agriculture marketing cooperative under which WSU will help farmers with cooperative development.
A Fox News story on Tuesday reporting on President Obama’s proposal to upgrade the national power grid mentions that WSU is one of four universities sharing in a federal grant to improve the grid’s security.
The Daily Score blog at the Sightline Institute web site wrote about the potential for developing “green” jobs in Washington State, citing information from a WSU Extension study on renewable energy trends and workforce development.
In her regular column in Sunday’s San Francisco Chronicle, food writer Marion Nestle cited WSU’s common reading program choice of “Omnivore’s Dilemma” as an example of the clash in opinions on food production.
On Wednesday the Spokesman Review reported on how the recent hard freeze limited this year’s autumn colors, citing WSU plant experts including Charles Cody as sources.
