300 Expected for WSU 4-H Teen Conference
More than 300 teens from across the state will come to Pullman to participate in this year’s WSU 4-H Teen Conference from Sunday, June 29 to Tuesday, July 1. While they are here, they will participate in educational workshops, recreational activities and learn about college and potential careers. Here are some events which we think have both visual appeal as well as interesting content.
Monday
8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m., Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum. Lateefah Simon, director of reentry services for San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris, will deliver the keynote address. Simon, who received the prestigious MacArthur Genius Fellowship in 2003, will discuss how youth can rise to the challenge and create change in their lives. She will draw on her transformative work with high-risk young people in high-need communities. Her presentation is open to the public.
9:45 a.m. – Noon, Bryan 404. “Examine the Evidence” Anna Ballard, a forensic scientist with the Washington State Patrol, will lead a workshop that will look at what it is to be in a crime lab and examine forensic evidence.
9:45 -- Noon, Bryan 406. “Sumobots: Bring it On!” Teens will build robots and program to compete against other robots in a Sumobot competition. The workshop will be led by David Willard, 4-H technology volunteer.
9:45 -- Noon, Thompson 21. “Caching in with GPS.” Teens will learn GPS technology and find hidden treasures on campus. Emily Burt, WSU Ferry County Extension educator, will lead the workshop
11 a.m. – Noon, Webster 16. “Sights and Sounds of Physics” Tom Johnson, scientific instructional technician in the Department of Physics and Astronomy will lead an entertaining workshop that will explore topics such as gravity, electricity, magnetism, flight and thermodynamics.
3:30 – 4:30 p.m., Avery 106. “Be the Scientist,” Kids will build a sailboat and discover the power of wind. They will mix chemicals and create snow. The workshop will be led by Extension Specialist Janet Edwards.
Tuesday
10 a.m. – 11 a.m. College Information Fair on the Terrell Mall. Campus departments will provide information about college and majors at a series of displays.
